Dr. Thanos Kolyviras, MD, PhD
Interventional Cardiologist

Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC)

Dr. Thanos Kolyviras is an Interventional Cardiologist specializing in minimally invasive techniques and the management of complex cardiovascular conditions. He serves as Director of the 4th Cardiology Department at Metropolitan General and maintains a private practice in Nea Smyrni, where he provides comprehensive cardiology evaluation and follow-up care.

He has performed more than 2,500 interventional procedures, ranging from diagnostic catheterizations and angioplasties to transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI), managing both routine and highly demanding cases.

His approach combines state-of-the-art technology with evidence-based medical knowledge, ensuring that every patient clearly understands their diagnosis and receives individualized treatment focused on safety and long-term quality of life.

Dr. Thanos Kolyviras graduated from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2002–2008).

Since 2022, Dr. Kolyviras has served as Director of the 4th Cardiology Department — Interventional Cardiology Unit at Metropolitan General, where he is responsible for coordinating the catheterization laboratory and managing complex interventional cardiology cases.

From 2016 to 2021, he served as Attending Physician in the Interventional Cardiology and Valvular Heart Disease Departments at Errikos Dunant Hospital Center, actively participating in the management of coronary artery disease and structural heart disease cases.

His professional career is defined by continuous engagement with the full spectrum of interventional cardiology, within highly demanding, structured hospital environments.

Coronary Artery Disease & Angioplasty

His interventional activity encompasses the complete diagnostic and therapeutic management of coronary artery disease, including diagnostic and right heart catheterizations, coronary angiography, and coronary angioplasty.

He has extensive experience in the management of complex coronary disease, including left main disease, bifurcation lesions, multivessel disease, and chronic total occlusions (CTO).

To optimize procedural outcomes, he employs advanced imaging and plaque modification technologies, including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), intravascular lithotripsy (Shockwave), and rotational atherectomy (Rotablator).

Advanced Techniques & High-Risk Support

For procedures of increased technical complexity, he applies specialized techniques including bioresorbable vascular scaffolds, graft angioplasty, below-the-knee peripheral interventions, and renal artery interventions.

He has experience in the use of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) for hemodynamic support in selected cases.

Structural Heart Disease & Specialized Interventions

His scope also includes structural heart disease interventions, such as left atrial appendage closure and atrial septal defect closure, as well as myocardial biopsies and pericardiocentesis.

He has performed specialized procedures including alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and retrieval of intravascular foreign bodies from the heart and great vessels.

Dr. Thanos Kolyviras actively participates in international multicenter studies in interventional cardiology, contributing to the advancement of contemporary techniques for complex coronary artery disease and transcatheter valvular interventions.

He has participated in research protocols including the Progress-CTO and HYDRA Valve studies, focusing on the optimization of revascularization in chronic total occlusions and the evaluation of new technologies in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI).

His research interests center on the improvement of hemodynamic parameters, the evaluation of novel interventional technologies, and the understanding of cardiovascular risk mechanisms.

He maintains an active international scientific profile and serves as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Interventional Cardiology.

Dr. Thanos Kolyviras holds the title of Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), a distinction awarded to cardiologists with documented scientific and clinical activity at a European level.

He has received the Certificate of Excellence from the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), as well as distinctions at Pan-European ESC Cardiology Congresses (Rome 2016 — Best Poster Award; Barcelona 2014 — Moderated Poster Presentation Winner).

He also holds certifications for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) from international medical device manufacturers, obtained through specialized training programs.
